Racer Bio
How long have you known about RAAM? How long afterwards did you decide to enter the race? What triggered your decision?
At least 20 years. I remember following Lon Haldeman when he was racing in the 80's. My first team RAAM was in 2006. A good friend wanted to do the race and asked me to join her team.
Athletic history (cycling results & other):
My background is as a triathlete. I have done over 200 tris starting in 1983. This includes Ironman Hawaii. I have been a member of the US age group team that competes at worlds and earned two gold medals in my age group. Besides triathlon I have completed 10 marathons and have cross country skied 10 American Birkebeiners and 17 Kortelopets.
Considering all sports, what were the events or outcomes that most impacted your life in both negative and positive manners?
Sports have been all positive for me. I taught, coached and particiapted. I hope to still be participating in sports for as long as my body will allow me to. I have enjoyed meeting new people and traveling the world doing different events. I think completing Ironman Hawaii was my biggest accomplishment, but finishing my first team RAAM is a close second. The experience of crossing the country on your bike with a group of people going 24/7 is amazing.
Who are your heroes? Why?
Being a triathlete I would have to say Paula Newby Fraser. She was just amazing at the ironman distance and didn't give up and dnf on the one day her body just said no.
What intimidates you most about RAAM?
I'm really not intimidated any more about RAAM. I was in 2006 wondering if I was capable of doing it, but I realized that doing it as a team allows an average biker to accomplish this awesome race.
Are you supporting an organization or Charity? Tell us why.
My team is supporting Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wisconsin. It is such a great organization and their mission is something we can all really get behind and ride for the kids that are so deserving.
Favorite quote, either famous or not, that fuels your ambition:
JUST DO IT! What more can you say. Nike really had it right on that one. Just get yourself off the couch and out the door. I don't care what it is there is just so much to do and enjoy outdoors.
What are your expectations from RAAM?
My number one expectation is to finish with all our team together having safely crossed the US. My second expectation is to finish faster then my 4 person women's team did in 2006.
