Profile Information

Do you like to ride a bike?
You betcha

My RAAM Profile

Occupation: Advanced Practice Nurse
College: UW-Madison; Yale University; UW-Milwaukee
Employer: Children's Hospital of Wisconsin
How long have you known about RAAM? How long afterwards did you decide to enter the race? What triggered your decision?
I've known about RAAM for years. One of my team members rode in 2006 which interested another team member, Nancy. So I talked to Paula for Nancy and Paula asked me if I was interested for 2008. I agreed to ride because I thought I'll never get another experience like this to ride across the country with a team. It took me about 2 days to decide. Luckily the team needed another rider so Nancy is riding too.

Athletic history (cycling results & other):
Running, triathlon, cross country skiing. Completed 10 birkebeiner ski races, 10 ironman triathlons, 1 50 mile Ice Age Trail run, competed in several triathlon world championships as an age group athlete. No athletic history prior to finishing college.

Considering all sports, what were the events or outcomes that most impacted your life in both negative and positive manners?
Finishing my first Ironman was truly an accomplishment and finishing my 10th ironman as one of my best mentally challenging races. Athletics has helped me figure out how to set goals in all aspects of my life. The negative...at one time my passion was my obsession but I got over that, it wasn't quick though

Who are your heroes? Why?
Anyone who tries to make a difference, anyone who perserveres; and I remember one 12yo girl with a brain tumor, Brittany, who was hospitalized with complications, she would do laps around the unit with her IV pole and tell her hunting stories, she's a tough girl, she's my hero.

What intimidates you most about RAAM?
The fatigue factor.

Are you supporting an organization or Charity? Tell us why.
Make A Wish Foundation-Wisconsin In my work at Children's Hospital, I know many children who have been recipients of wishes. It is a really special experience for kids and families who have had life threatening illnesses. The wish helps to make things better in bad situations. A boy I helped to take care of recently is going to Las Vegas to watch the NASCAR race and meet Jeff Gordon. His room at the hospital was covered in NASCAR/Jeff Gordon wallpaper. It's his dream come true.

Favorite quote, either famous or not, that fuels your ambition:
A few...you can only go as hard as you can go (me); no one can intimidate you without your permission (Eleanor Roosevelt); the price of success is hard work, dedication, and determination (Vince Lombardi)

What are your expectations from RAAM?
From the event...a once in a lifetime experience; from the organization...organization and safety

I can't believe it's over

There was so much training and anticipation for the week and now it's completed. I learned so much about teamwork and how important it is to say "thank you" and pitch in even a small amount. All of the crew were a Godsend (emphasis on the capital G). There couldn't have been a better crew chief in Nanette with her leadership and organizational skills and the ever present, though quietly wise cracking Gene. The stories they will tell for a lifetime. And Mary with her ginger remedy for upset stoma… Continue

I love getting in shape

The last two weeks I have been feeling much stronger. The hard workouts and the winter training have paid off. This week I rode out to Pewaukee and around the lake then The Tuesday Lannon ride is really a challenge...looking at my heart rate monitor I am up to my max several times on the hilly course. I rode the Transition Bike shop "Chat Ride" on Thursday. It 's great ride as it is a controlled pace at 17MPH for 35 miles, a pretty flat course. Today Nancy and I rode the Southwest Y ride, 42 mil… Continue

Simulation Weekend #2

I fininshed simulation weekend #2. My goal was to get in 3 hours of training per day for 4 days in a row. I mixed up the training thoughout the days with mostly shorter bouts of cycling from early morning to later evening. I also counted riding my bike to work which helps (although I get a little sweaty by the time I get there, I have a little routine so I don't look like a complete mess. I have been there long enough that most people think I am nuts anyway.) I also mixed up the heart rate train… Continue

I'm tired today!

I biked easy on the trainer this morning for a half hour. I planned on running hills with the tri team but didn't get out of work early enough. So I ran with the dog instead. She doesn't run well in weather warmer than about 60 degrees. It was about 70 out but it was such a great evening. Well she held true to not running well...her tongue was hanging out about a foot and then woofed out on the cold tile floor once we got home (after 20 min). Thank god because I felt like I had lead legs. I have… Continue

Build Week #1

Finally got outside for a longer ride this weekend. Got out on Saturday for a 56 mile ride out to the Holy Hill area. The weather was great. The route was pretty hilly. There is one hill, Mill Rd. Hill (hill-zilla), that I have't ridden in quite awhile. It was nausea-inducing. Lucky I had the compact crank. It was a good memory to burn. I actually got in 12 hours of training this week, it's still hard fitting it all in. Still trying to motivate myself for a morning workout. Maybe I should cancel… Continue
